Lessons from a TV show
As a Cameroonian first daughter and middle child, I have always been fascinated by the Disney show ‘stuck in the middle.’ At the time I couldn’t quite put my finger on why this show resonated with me so deeply,but I found myself rewatching the same episodes over and over again. Despite having other favorite shows on Disney, ‘Stuck in the middle’ held a special place in my heart. It wasn’t until years later that I realised why this show was so significant to me. I identified with Harly Diaz’s experience as a middle child, and I saw parallels between her struggles and my own.

Like Harley, I’ve often felt like I’m navigating multiple roles and expectations-as a first daughter. I’m expected to set a good example and as a middle child, I’m often caught in the middle of family dynamics. Through each episode of stuck in the middle I was subconsciously seeking answers and solutions to challenges of being a first daughter and a middle child-the pressure to excel,the burden of responsibilty,and the struggle to balance my own needs with family expectations.
Now as a grown woman I understand that my fascination with this show was more than just entertainment;it was a reflection of my own experiences and struggles. This website is dedicated to exploring these challenges and sharing insights on what it’s like to be a first daughter and a middle child or just a first born child in a big family.
